Well, you have come to the right place. It’s a common question that most business owners would ask. Before moving on, there are many websites that talk about the definition and distinctive difference between SEO and PPC. In here, we are going to share our insight on both and when to use it to your advantage. Let’s go!

By simplified definition, SEO is a long term marketing strategy that takes some time to optimise and build while PPC is a much faster process for people who want to advertise their services/ products almost instantly on Google platform.

SEO is useful when you want a more consistent online presence on Google without worrying that one day your online presence disappear unless you do it the Black Hat way. It works very well especially if you are in a competitive industry when the auction biddings on Google are high. It can save you a lot of unnecessary cost such as competitors clicking on your ads. However, you have to understand though it may seem good to have it is also important to know that SEO requires a long term effort on your website for Google to deem it as useful and relevant and thus give you high ranking. Therefore if you don’t have the luxury to wait for it to grow. It may not be the best choice for you at the moment.

PPC, on the other hand, can be a much faster way to obtain leads if you have some marketing budget to spare. But one thing you need to know is if you choose to do it yourself, make sure that the keywords that you are bidding is relatively affordable according to your budget and there are searches on these keywords. Otherwise, it can be a waste of time, resources and money.

Here are some questions to ask yourself to help you better decide between both.

#1 Do you have the budget? 


If you have little to no budget, our suggestion is to do either on your own first. Find online videos that teach about SEO/PPC. Information is everywhere now. It’s also a skill to be able to find the resources on your own to save some money in a time of crisis like now; COVID-19. A good place to start is YouTube. 

Tip for SEO – Be sure not to use copied content 

Tip for PPC – Be sure to do A/B testing to see which ads work better and turn off the ads that don’t work. A good timeline is to wait at least 2-4 weeks to gather data to compare. 

If you do have the money to spare and you are not an SEO/PPC expert. Our suggestion is to outsource the work to the digital marketing experts to do it for you. This will help you to release some of your times to focus on your main business. 

#2  Can you afford to wait?  


One question to ask yourself if you are the business owner to assess your business situation, can it survive for at least 9-12 months with the current assets? If the answer is yes, do SEO, the returns are much higher as the online presences are more consistent which mean your website is more likely shown to the targetted audience without worrying your ads may disappear once your ads spend is used up. Also, studies show that people prefer to click on organic results more than paid ads.

However, if you can’t wait that long, a good alternative is to do PPC to get instant results.

#3 Long term or Short term business? 


If your marketing plan is just to advertise a certain product or service for a short period – says less than 6 months and then move on to the next project. PPC will be a more suitable choice.

If you will be in the game of business for a longer period, then doing SEO will help you build web authority and online branding that have higher returns in the long run.

Finally which to choose? 


Depending on your marketing strategy, budget, resources and how fast you need to execute your marketing plan. All these will be considerate factors for you to make a decision when you are still starting your business.

Of course, if you have been in business for a long time and have enough budget. Best is to do both, the more marketing channels you reach, the higher chance of you getting more potential customers.

So, what is exactly is duplicate content and why it’s not advisable. In this post, you are about to find out ‘what deem as duplicate content in the Google algorithm and how to avoid/minimize doing it. 

Duplicate content is about content found on multiple pages under one domain. That is to say, if you have several pages that show exactly the same, or very similar, type of information.

This may include simply copying an entire section of text and content and then copying it to a new page or rewriting the previous content without adding value or rewriting.

What does Google say? 

Duplicate content generally refers to substantial blocks of content within or across domains that either completely matches other content or are appreciably similar. Mostly, this is not deceptive in origin …” – Google

There are plenty of legitimate reasons for having copied content within one website. It can be about customer reviews, company presentations linked news and more.

Google advocates the use of a rel = canonical tag to point to its original content.

The important thing that you need to bring with you is that your text should be unique and offer new value for ranking on Google.

Does Google penalize duplicate content?

There is no Google penalty for duplicate content. If you take an article from DN and then post it on your website, you will not be penalized from the Google page. This is something that many have believed is the case and is a common SEO myth.

However, Google filters out search results that are duplicate versions of the same content if they are broadly similar. Google then chooses to display a canonicalized (source) and URL to display in the search results.

What Google really dislikes!

What Google doesn’t like that can negatively impact your SEO is if your website has “thin” content, duplicated (rewritten) content or almost exactly the same content. What you really need to know is that Google has smart algorithms that can determine whether your text is unique or not.

Also, be careful to write profound texts that are in-depth and really respond to the viewer’s intent in a profound way from multiple perspectives.

#1 Keyword Stuffing 

By definition, it means unnecessary repeating keywords in your website. 

For example: if you are selling wallets online and you have a website page that goes like this. ‘Selling authentic leather wallets, it is one of the best wallets you will ever need. A leather wallet that holds all your cash and coins without worrying it might fall off. It will be your best investment of the year to get this lucky authentic leather wallet. Here is the ‘Add to cart’ button to get your authentic leather wallet now!” 


Notice that there are a lot of repeating of ‘authentic leather wallet’ in one paragraph. This is something that you should avoid making the same mistake. Not only it doesn’t help much in your search rankings, but Google will also deem your web page as spam. A big ‘No no’. 

#2 Duplicate Content 

By definition: taking the exact content from other sources and put it on your website. 

Now you may think it is okay if you credit the sources that you took the content from. Still, from Google’s point of view, that’s is copy and pasting content that already exists.

#3 Article Spinning

By definition: A way to to go around duplicate content, people invented article spinning or content automation.

This is when someone takes the material and changes the text “just enough” by adjusting most of the words. By using synonyms to replace as much as possible, the article is different but is still a duplicate. 


It may seem that not much harm was done on your website. However, it does give a poor user experience which not what Google wants as well. 

#4 Cloaking

By definition: Showing Google spiderbot and web users two completely different results. This is often done to cheat Spiderbot achieve the desired rankings. 


Example: Showing a page of Flash Videos or images to web users while serving HTML text to search engines. 

Another example is by inserting text or keywords into a page only when the User-agent requesting the page is a search engine, not a human visitor.

Google Crawler Moves to The Latest Version of Chromium

Google at the recently held Google I/O conference announced an update to Googlebot, the company’s web crawler. The new update will make the crawler ‘evergreen’, i.e: it will always be updated on Google’s Chromium.

The company made an announcement with this post:

“Today, we are happy to announce that Googlebot now runs the latest Chromium rendering engine (74 at the time of this post) when rendering pages for Search. Moving forward, Googlebot will regularly update its rendering engine to ensure support for latest web platform features.”

Googlebot was earlier lagging behind in an effort to index pages that are compatible with previous versions of the Chrome browser.

What Is Google Chromium?

Chromium is an open-source and free web browser designed by Google. It supplies most source codes for Google Chrome, which is among the most popular web browsers today.

The two browsers are quite similar but with a few differences in terms of interface and design.

What Does This New Update Change?

This means the crawler will now be able to crawl all the modern features and websites including JavaScript and ES6. According to the reports, it supports more than 1,000 new features.

As a result, more content on your website will be searched by Google. This will have a direct impact on your search engine ranking since the search engine will be able to index more pages without requiring special efforts.

This will also make the job easier for you since you will not have to spend a lot of time coming up with solutions to get Google to index your pages.

What Google Says

The company issued this statement:

“You should check if you’re transpiling or use polyfills specifically for Googlebot and if so, evaluate if this is still necessary. If they are not necessary, you can consider removing these.”

However, there is still some work that needs to be done. The company said:

“There are still some limitations, so check our troubleshooter for JavaScript-related issues and the video series on JavaScript SEO.”
